The 'bare essentials' for expecting parents

by Michaella Menin on July 19, 2022
Becoming a first time parent can be a little daunting. We're not taught how to care for a baby or what to expect at school. With all these new skills you'll have to master as a first timer, you may feel a bit out of your depth. As a mother who has now gone through those first few months, a little advise is keep it simple, you will learn as you go.
But to start you off on your journey, and to help you from not breaking the bank before your little one even arrives, here is a list of the bare essentials for expecting parents wanting to keep it simple.

What you'll need in the first few months

✔️A few newborn or size 1 nappies and a few sizes up (your baby is sure to grow quickly) @ecoboomsa. Cloth nappies are a great option once you're all settled in with baby.
✔️A lot of wet wipes!!! @purebeginnings
✔️2-3 Swaddle blankets @cottonpathdesign
✔️A soother incase baby has reflux or are colicky @bibs_southafrica
✔️5 newborn babygrows and a few more in the size up (these will be too small very quickly)
✔️For co-sleeping, a sleep pod or cot that fits at the side of the bed
✔️For non co-sleepers, get a cot that will adjust with growing baby
✔️A lot of burping cloths (I used cheap towelling fabric cut into small rectangles)
✔️A wrap baby carrier or stage 1 carrier @ubuntubaba
✔️A newborn or 360 baby car seat @noolababy
✔️A decent nappy bag
✔️A leather changing mat (the fabric ones are hard to wash) @land.of.lark
✔️An all-in-one baby wash and shampoo, bum cream and a body cream (your baby doesn’t need a full vanity bag of washes and creams!) @ohliefnaturalproducts
✔️A few high contrast and textured toys and books (household and garden items are preferred entertainment)
✔️A nursing pillow that doubles up as a support for baby to sit
✔️Invest in an all-terrain, all stages pram because you will spend double or triple buying multiple prams. @pr3loved_sa is a great second hand pram marketplace

❌Don’t spend a lot on making a pretty nursery in the first few months because 90% of the time your baby will want to sleep near you
❌Don’t spend money on fancy sleeping items because you never know your babies preferences (they could refuse a cot for the first 6 months)
❌Avoid buying too many toiletries for baby, they don’t get very dirty apart from explosive nappies and don’t really need to be washed and scrubbed very often
❌Don’t buy baby shoes until they are walking, they will kick them off. Stick to socks
❌Don’t buy lots of cute outfits, they are difficult to put on and can often be itchy or uncomfy for baby
❌You don’t need a special bath for your baby, just roll a towel and put it in the bath for your baby to lie in or jump in the bath with babe
❌Don’t spend on bottles, breast pumps and bottle warmers before you get into feeding. By an inexpensive Haakaa pump to start

Remember that you will learn your baby as you spend more time together so don't worry too much in the start. You can always lean on doulas, mothers, mother-in-laws or partners to run to the store if you need something.
